I see that the Sunderland team fly into Airport this afternoon with an Eastern Airways charter from Newcastle. This got me to thinking why we are not making more use of Swansea Airport. Our team fly to most places in the Premier League and also to Europe, shame we can't utilise our own airport. I know flights have been tried many times from there and Air Wales used to have flights to London City Airport from Swansea not so long ago. With Airport's demise due to it's close proximity to the booming airport of Bristol and their cheap flights, you would have thought the Welsh Government, instead of buying the loss making Airport, could have put the money to better use by developing Swansea Airport. All it needs to do is to attract the big two low cost airlines Ryanair and Easyjet, and away to go. If the likes of Exeter,Bournemouth, and Southampton, can do it,then it's not such a far fetched idea.

I think the problem is logistics. Given Swansea Airport is in the Gower and there's no way they'll ever sanction expansion to the road network there it's unlikely that Swansea (at that site, anyway) will ever have a decent international airport. Pretty made the assembly is is buying the airport...

"Swansea Airport is situated about 6 miles from the centre of Swansea. The airport is mainly used for private jets and helicopters. Swansea airport was built during World War II on common land. The aerodrome opened in 1941 taking a year to build. It was designed as a fighter station to protect south Wales. Today the airport is a hub of activity in the private jet charter market"

Sounds like that was written by someone with a vested interest in the airport...

From Wiki - The Welsh Assembly Government is currently conducting studies into improving the facilities at the airport as part of the transport infrastructure development strategy for the whole of Wales. The improvements may require some public sector support. Development proposals include: a new terminal building, new hangars, upgraded operating facilities, new fencing and a new access road.
There has been widespread local opposition against the idea of further development of the airport. The main concerns are: the impact on the internationally important Special Area of Conservation which almost surrounds the airport; noise from the increased number of flights at the airport; and the negative impact of the development of the airport on the local scenery, since Gower is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Personally I wouldn't like to see it expanded on the current site. It would bring too much chaos to the Gower. Somewhere near Felindre would be good, but is only 40 odd miles away - it doesn't really make sense to have two airports that close to each other in a country the size of Wales, surely?

Exeter Airport is 68 miles from Bristol Airport. Bristol Airport is 63 miles from Airport. As for country comparison,Glasgow Airport is 48 miles from Edinburgh Airport. Swansea Airport is 50.7 miles from Airport. I agree that if Wales second city is to have an airport,it should be closer to the M4 corridor.
